Madarao / Tangram is a hidden gem in Japan's Niigata Prefecture, offering some of the best powder and tree skiing in the world. There are more than 30 runs on offer between Madarao Kogen and Tangram Ski Circus (accessible via lifts with lift tickets working across both resorts) with a fantastic mix of on and off piste. Madarao is one of the few resorts that actively promote and allow tree skiing with powder-specific tree runs cleared out through the summer months to make for better riding.

Madarao is nestled right in the middle of Japan’s infamous ‘powder belt’, with Nozawansen, Shiga Kogen and the Myoko resorts only 30mins - 1hr away by car and also accessible by public/private transport.
Madarao Kogen has two onsens available for public use. The Madarao Kogen Hotel Onsen is a 10min walk away, while the Madarao No Yu Onsen is a 10min drive away.

There are plenty of food and beverage options including local and western, available right here in Madarao, or you could travel to Iiyama if looking for something more. Some of the best Japanese food we’ve eaten has been in Iiyama.
